Metal detectors are uncomplicated instruments that don't vary much between
brands and for the most part only have four simple components:
Control box:
This is the brain of the metal detector. The control box is the circuitry that
controls the speaker, batteries, and microprocessor. It will be enclosure and on
top of the metal detector, often with a display unit and jack for your
headphones.
Coil:
This can be called the search head, loop, antenna, or search coil. Just as some
of these names indicate, it's the round disc located at the bottom of the metal
detector. It's the sensing part of your unit. You can think of it as the nose of
your unit that sniffs out the treasure.
Shaft:
The shaft and that's just what it is, connects your control box to your coil.
Depending on the brand and model you have it may or may not be adjustable.
However, most of the units I've seen are adjustable, giving you the best
comfortable level for your height.
Stabilizer:
This is an optional component to the unit. I highly recommend that you have one.
The stabilizer is typically an arm brace, which helps to steady the unit as you
sweep your metal detector back and forth.
